Breaking the Societal Expectations of Women
|
In a society that honors perfection and beauty, women are often perceived as symbols of society’s ideals. This toxic perception of beauty influences all generations of women, and soon consumes any positive examples of femininity and feminism for the younger generations. Focusing on the impact of this rigid structure of beauty and behavior for women can demonstrate the adverse effects these ideas have on society. Therefore, by destroying society’s focus on female perfection with appearance, and highlighting the unorthodox in our society can break away from traditionalist views of females. With flowing lines, similar to mist, I drive the idea that humans are precarious existences on Earth and that appearances are only temporary, and the warped definition of feminine colors such as pinks and purples combine to create a personal portrayal of the pressures of society on women’s mentality of themselves and others. I continue this idea of highlighting the unique and petty perspectives of female demeanor and appearance, that depict a surreal and dream-like reality to signify the mental strains women endure for the sake of society’s wants. Although my pieces may represent females, they are not to be the focus of lust or beauty but my honest representation of humanity’s unhealthy obsession with perfection. I add the symbols of puppet dolls to many of my pieces to stress how society controls the puppet, women, and the dolls are forced to act and look specific ways according to their puppeteer, society. The flowing nature, bright colors and “feminine” colors, and addition of dolls, all combine to demonstrate my perspective of the grotesquely realistic and uncaring nature of society’s impact on women. My pieces focus not only on the physical, but delve further into the essence of what it means to be a woman in our modern world.
